Notes: This course examines the music and career of The Tragically Hip from a critical perspective, using its music, iconography, reception and activism as entry points into the idea of Canadian identity. We will not be concerned with establishing the "greatness" (or lack thereof) of the band, but we will be trying to understand their unique place in the Canadian imaginaire. We will consider song lyrics as poetry, music and its relationship to place and identity, iconography and promotion. We will also consider lead singer Gord Downie's solo projects, particularly the Secret Path project that attempted to bring the story of Indigenous peoples and residential schools. |
