Welcome: familiar and new faces

The new academic year is always a busy time with new students joining the university, but there are also changes and new faces in faculty, sessionals and staff members. Here’s an overview.

Christine Brubaker has joined the Division of Drama as Assistant Professor where she will be teaching Directing and Acting in both the undergrad and MFA program. Christine hails from Toronto and has a 25 year career as professional actor and director. Her most recent work includes Wilde Tales at the Shaw Festival and 7th Cousins: An Automythography with Nightwood Theatre. "I'm thrilled to make the move across the country and get to know Calgary and its community of artists, scholars and theatre practitioners.

After 7 years as a Sessional Instructor, Dr. Sarah J. Kenny joins us as tenure-track Assistant Professor (Dance Science) in the Faculties of Arts and Kinesiology. She will continue teaching the Safe Dance Practice and Dance Science courses for undergraduate dance majors, while expanding her Dance Science research program in the area of injury prevention. Dr. Kenny will also serve as the liaison between the Division of Dance and the Faculty of Kinesiology, providing leadership and mentoring to students enrolled in our combined Bachelor of Arts (Dance) / Bachelor of Kinesiology undergraduate degree. “I am most excited to share my knowledge of dancer health, dance science and current safe dance practice initiatives with our undergraduate dance majors. As a joint hire with Kinesiology, it is my hope to inspire the next generation of Dance Scientists through collaborative, interdisciplinary research with fellow Faculty in SCPA, Kinesiology and our community partners.”

The Dance Division welcomes David Outevsky (Toronto) and Oleksandra Kondratyeva (Winnipeg) as new sessional instructors in Dance. Mr. Outevsky will teach "Dance History" and "Dance Aesthetics, Criticism and Analysis”. Ms. Kontratyeva will teach “Elementary Ballet 1 and 2”  and "Intermediate Ballet 1 and 2”.

Melissa Monteros, associate professor in Dance, serves as the new Chair of the Division of Dance as Anna Mouat moves into retirement.

John McDougall has joined the SCPA staff team to support the human resources and finance operations for the Dance, Drama, and Music Divisions as the Business Process Administrator. John hopes his experience in commercial arts and business management may serve the aspirations and inspirations of the up-and-coming leaders in the performing arts, as well as the exceptional instructors showing the way. "It's an unbelievably exciting time of evolution and possibility for the expressive arts. I love being a tiny part of this dynamic hub at the forefront of it all!"
