Laura Hynes

Coloratura soprano Laura Hynes has earned a reputation at home and abroad as a charismatic performer, creator, and teacher.  With her musical training rooted in piano, the American soprano found her true calling in high-flying classical singing. 

With a 21st-century approach to art song and opera, Dr. Hynes is committed to innovative recital programming, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the creation of new works. Her Raise Your Voice project launched a successful and continually evolving body of work addressing social justice issues through staged recitals.

A Fulbright scholar in Paris, Hynes spent six years in France and Germany, performing repertoire ranging from baroque opera with Les Arts Florissants to “classical cabaret” on French television and radio. She has performed opera roles, solo recitals, and concerts throughout Europe, Canada, and the U.S., in venues including The Barbican in London, New York’s Alice Tully Hall, the Cité de la Musique, the Châtelet, Théatre Mogador, and Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Opéra de Marseille, le Corum and l'Opéra de Montpellier, Théatre National de Toulouse, as well as major concert venues in Lisbon, Madrid, Seville, Frankfurt, and Brussels. 

After completing the prestigious NATS Internship hosted at the Ohio State University in 2014, Dr. Hynes was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Murray State University. She was the Carolyn Bailey & Dominick Argento Fellow at the University of Minnesota, where she completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 2013. She has also been awarded degrees from the Paris Conservatory (CNSMDP, Cycle de Perfectionnement), Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (M.M.), and Miami University (B.M.).

Dr. Hynes is dedicated to educating students of classical voice in a way that prepares them for an ever-shifting artistic landscape. She offers training with a solid foundation in bel canto technique, a process-oriented awareness of the body as instrument, and rigorous attention to the finest details of language and music. Her approach to teaching and performance is at once flexible, intellectual, collaborative, and entrepreneurial.
