Notes: This course examines the music, social and political history, art, and literature of Paris from the time of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) to the end of the First World War (1918). Through of series of assignments consisting of readings, listening, and musical analysis, the course will explore the artistic culture of Paris during this period. While the principal focus will be on the music of the period, there will also be assignments that involve social and political history, as well as the parallels between music, art, and literature. The first part of the course will treat the major composers of the late Romantic period in Paris. The final portion of the course will focus upon the unique contribution of Debussy and Ravel to French music during between 1900-1918.
