Selected topics examining popular music from a critical perspective. Examines the meaning and messages of popular music and its impact on present-day culture. Topics may include the examination of the work of specific creators or performers, the recording industry, the impact of specific instruments (e.g. guitar, percussion, electronic media, etc.), or cross-cultural influences. Attendance at relevant musical concerts and lectures may be required.
This course may be repeated for credit.

- Credit for Music 306 and any of 301, 302, 304, 402 will not be allowed.

| Notes: Progressive Rock. A multimedia survey course exploring the genre of popular music known as Progressive Rock. The course will include an examination of Progressive Rock¿s early history from its psychedelic beginnings, through its heyday in the 1970s, and its legacy in the 1980s and beyond. Discussions will center on a survey of some of Progressive Rock¿s most well-known icons and will include detailed analyses and in-depth discussions of their works. |
