Notes: Nineteenth-Century Art Song. The nineteenth-century produced the largest number of songs that still fill concert programs. This course presents and overview of the song genre beginning with Schubert and concluding with the early song of Schoenberg and Berg. The course will also address the song literature of France, England, and Spain. The course will trace the history of nineteenth-century art song through the study and analysis of representative works by the major composers of song during the century. The course will include text analysis, the study of musical forms and melodic structures, and the role of the accompaniment. There will be a substantial listening component to the course. |
