In-depth study of selected composers, their music, and their relationship to intellectual history (i.e. Mozart and the French Revolution), and/or examinations of specific western and non-western musical cultures (i.e. Music in India, Music in post-war Germany) and their impact. Attendance at relevant musical concerts and lectures may be required. Also known as: (formerly Music History and Literature 311)

| Notes: The course will study a variety of music and musical traditions from the French diaspora including Canada, USA, Africa, Latin America, Asia and Australia. Past and current historical and political context will be considered as well as an introduction to strategies for analyzing and discussing different genres of music, from folk to classical to electronica to hip-hop. |
