Selected topics examining popular music from a critical perspective. Examines the meaning and messages of popular music and its impact on present-day culture. Topics may include the examination of the work of specific creators or performers, the recording industry, the impact of specific instruments (e.g. guitar, percussion, electronic media, etc.), or cross-cultural influences. Attendance at relevant musical concerts and lectures may be required.
This course may be repeated for credit.

| Notes: A survey of popular music and culture from 1950 to 1977 within an historical and sociological context. This course examines popular music trends during these decades, from the blues to the beginning of hip-hop, with a particular emphasis on the origins and development of rock musics. The course will examine the meaning and messages of popular music during this period, and its impact on present-day culture. |
