Survey and specific examination of popular music and culture, ranging from classical styles to rock, within an historical and sociological context. The course will examine the meaning and messages of popular music, and its impact on present-day culture. Topics may include The Beatles and Rolling Stones, Rock and Roll, Black Music, jazz, music and media, blues, Sinatra, Broadway and others.
This course may be repeated for credit.

- Credit for this course not applicable to Majors in Music. Minors in Music may count no more than 1 full-course equivalent of Music History and Literature 209, 307, 309 and 311 for credit to their degree.

| Notes: Prior to leaving for New York, students are required to attend eight sessions: on April 5, 12 and May 7, 8 and 10 lectures will take place from 17:00-21:00 in CHF202, on May 1 and 3 there is a film showing in the Visual Resource Centre students must attend one showing from either 8:30-12:30 or 12:30-4:30. On May 12 there will be a final meeting in CHF 202 from 13:00-17:00. Depart for New York May 13 and return to Calgary May 27, 2012.
