Notes: The Broadway Musical. This course is intended for the general undergraduate student. It will provide a history of the Broadway music from its roots in operetta and early American popular song with a focus on the major classics of Broadway theatre to about 1960. There will also be a brief treatment of the concept musical of the post-1960 period. The focus of the course will concern selected major musicals (Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, etc.) in an historical/analytical context, treating the role of song as a central, evolving element in the art form. There will be a substantial listening (viewing) component. A detailed syllabus of weekly lectures, readings, and listening assignments will be provided.
Students may take both MUSI 306 and MUSI 402 if the topic of study is different and if they receive permission from the Academic Development Specialists (ADS); interested students should contact the ADS advisors in the Student Success Centre. |
