Notes: Mozart to Mahler: Vienna¿s Golden Century. This course examines the music of Vienna during the period from the symphonies and concertos of Haydn and Mozart to the monumental symphonies of Mahler a century later. The course takes as its fundamental perspective the contrast between the world of "high art," as exemplified by the symphonic music of Beethoven and Brahms, and the Viennese ideal of "music for the people," as exemplified in the comic operas and operettas of Mozart, Johann Strauss, Jr., and Franz Lehar. The music is discussed against the backdrop of the political, social, and historical events of the century. Emphasis will be placed upon a listening knowledge of the selected music. |
