LEC 1 | MW 09:00 - 10:15 | Kenneth DeLong | Outline | |||
Notes: This course is intended for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students in music. After initially treating ideas of nationalism in music, as developed by Gottfried Herder in the late eighteenth century, the course explores the national musical cultures of Germany, Poland, Hungary, Russia, Bohemia, Scandinavia, Spain, and England during the middle and later nineteenth century. The course blends guided listening and analysis with selected readings, with the purpose of developing an awareness of the common elements behind these different national musical cultures (folk music, dance, opera, symphonic poem), as well as their individual national elements. |
