The University of Calgary Chorus is a 90-voice choir made up of students, community members, and faculty. The students come from a wide range of faculties such as kinesiology, engineering, education, nursing, law, and arts. This choir performs a wide variety of works throughout each academic year and is active in performance on campus and in the wider Calgary community.

The concert on April 9 is the finale for this music performance course. The repertoire for this concert will include pieces by Ysaye M. Barnwell, Eric Whitacre, Harry Somers, Anton Bruckner, John Rutter, and Murray Schafer.

Once again, the University Chorus will be joined for this concert by the Calgary Wind Symphony (under the direction of Dr. Jeremy Brown) for Carl Orff’s masterpiece, Carmina Burana. These two ensembles collaborated in December on this work to a sold-out audience and standing ovation.

This concert will be conducted by Tim Korthuis in fulfilment of his senior recital for his Masters degree.

Tim Korthuis hails from Okotoks, Alberta where he holds an undergraduate degree in piano performance from Rocky Mountain College and is now studying for a Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting. During his time at RMC, he toured to Eastern Canada and the USA, performing in New York City, Toronto and the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. In the Spring of 2013, Tim had the opportunity to study conducting in Vienna, Austria and was then invited to Bulgaria for an additional conducting engagement.

Tim currently studies conducting with Dr. Colleen Whidden as Graduate Conductor of the University Chorus. He also has studied conducting with Professor Edmond Agopian and Dr. Don Christianson, and vocal techniques with Dr. Patricia Hyrinkiw. He is currently the Worship & Arts Pastor at Okotoks Alliance Church as well as conducting the Okotoks Men’s Chorus, and enjoying life with his wife Tanya, and their four fantastic children.
