Wagonstage Children's Theatre produces entertaining, interactive and educational plays for families, written and directed by theatre professionals and performed by drama students of the School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Calgary.

The program started out in 1971 as a partnership between the City of Calgary and the division of Drama. Every summer, the company toured the city and performed plays in various locations. Since last year, Wagonstage has found a new home at the Calgary Zoo.

This summer, drama students Brandon Huszti, Kaitlyn Olfert, Jocelyn Spielman and Logan Teske will be performing two different 20-minute family-friendly plays, written by Nicola Elson and directed by Kelly Reay.

Hippo Needs a Bath tells the story of two clowns who have one job to do: give a hippo a bath. But how does one give a hippo a bath?

“There will be clowns, a giant hippo puppet, live music and shenanigans galore,” explains Elson. “This play is suitable for all ages and especially fit for the little ones.”

The Dinosaur Club, No Babies Allowed! follows the adventures of budding paleontologist Wallace and his best friend Troy the Triceratops. Together, they spend their days digging in their sandbox, looking for fossils. Until one day, they get some rather unsettling news that turns their world upside-down.

“We’ve got shadow theatre, lots of dinosaurs and plenty of opportunities for children to have their moment on stage,” says Elson. “This show is suitable for all ages, and ideal for five to ten year olds.”
