With the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra

In a new twist for 2017, four music students—two from the University of Calgary and two from Mount Royal University Conservatory — compete in our eagerly anticipated concerto competition, with none other than the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra for accompaniment. This annual event never fails to impress and delight.

The winner of the First Prize will have the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the CPO in one of their professional concerts as well as the chance to meet with one or more of the CPO conductors for a mentorship session.

This year's competitors are:

Yan Li (violin)
Performing Sibelius: Violin Concerto, 1st movement

17 year-old violinist Yan Li is currently studying with Bill van der Sloot in the Advanced Performance Program at Mount Royal Conservatory. She has performed as a soloist with the Calgary Civic Symphony, Calgary Youth Orchestra and will perform with Lethbridge Symphony in their 2017-2018 season.

Cameron Leahy (violin)
Performing William Walton: Violin Concerto, 1st movement (Andante tranquillo)

Cameron is in his first year at the University of Calgary studying violin with professor Edmund Agopian. He is a winner of the Calgary Concerto Competition and has received multiple scholarships at the Calgary Performing Arts Festival.
