Tanya Palmer BFA

I have lots of fond memories of the University of Calgary and the Drama Department. It was a really welcoming place, the professors were very encouraging and responded to creativity and risk, and my fellow students were both great friends and inspiring collaborators.  I’d say that there are lots of ways to make a life in the theatre – find the thing (or things) that excite you the most and that use your skills, and then find the places and people that admire and appreciate those skills so you can put them to use. And don’t accept the idea that there’s only one way of doing things – it’s a big world out there with lots of different modes of making theatre, different audiences, different artists – if you feel like you don’t fit, you probably just haven’t found your tribe, but they’re out there.

Tanya is currently the Director of New Play Development at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.  There, she runs the literary department, which includes reading a lot of new plays, evaluating them and advocating for new work at the Goodman. She is also the primary contact for literary agents, and leads the theatre's commissioning and development program. She also serves as a production dramaturg on plays in the season – primarily new plays.
