Jessica McLaughlin was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and grew up in the Lower Mainland cities. Starting on piano at age 5, she began to develop her interest in music and performance. In elementary and secondary school she dabbled in playing woodwind instruments, settling on clarinet. Upon hearing a big band play for the first time, she discovered the saxophone. Starting on tenor, she played in jazz band, and a 5 piece combo throughout high school while completing the honours and International Baccalaureate Programme. She graduated with a Diploma in Music from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Langley, British Columbia in April 2011. In March 2012 she received 2 gold certificates at the Kiwanis Music Festival in Calgary, Alberta. Currently studying alto saxophone, she is completing her Bachelor of Music Degree in performance at the University of Calgary under the guidance of Dr. Jeremy Brown.
