Eli Bennett and the CCAE

Eli Bennett with the Calgary Creative Arts Ensemble

Sep. 28 at 8 p.m.

Tickets: $25 Adults - $18 Students/Seniors

The Monday Night Jazz Series returns to the University Theatre on September 28 with a concert celebrating new talent, while paying tribute to some of the greatest names in jazz and big band history.

Internationally acclaimed saxophonist and film composer Eli Bennett will be joined by the Calgary Creative Arts Ensemble (CCAE) for a concert aimed at jazz lovers old, and new.

The Calgary Creative Arts Ensemble, Calgary’s newest big band, features some of Canada’s most respected jazz musicians, including trombonist Carsten Rubeling, trumpeter Andre Wickenheiser, and saxophonist Mark DeJong and is lead by drummer Jon McCaslin. CCAE was formed with the aim to shine a spotlight on homegrown talent and its repertoire primarily features work by Canadian composers and arrangers and collaborations with Canadian musicians. The ensemble only plays four shows a year, making the concert with Bennett a must-see event.

With 35 international awards and four Leo awards for his film compositions, Bennett has quickly made a name for himself in the jazz world. Audiences will feel the full effect of his skill when the concert kicks off with Starlight, a piece originally written for famed Canadian saxophonist Kirk MacDonald and A Shade of Jade by the legendary Joe Henderson. Both pieces feature saxophone solos that highlight Bennet’s artistic and technical prowess. The concert will also include pieces composed by some of the CCAE members.

Eli Bennett performs with the Calgary Creative Arts Ensemble on Sep. 28 at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre. Admission is $25 for adults and $18 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the door or by calling 403.210.7576.
