SCPA Cultural Community Forum

The School of Creative and Performing Arts is launching a new initiative this semester. One of the key benefits of the three divisions of Dance, Drama and Music coming together in the form of a School is the increased opportunity to discuss key issues across disciplines. Challenges within one discipline may be resolved through approaches gleaned from another, and discipline specific opportunities can open up exponentially in interdisciplinary contexts. We want to extend these discussions beyond our own programs through a forum series designed to foster conversation, exchange, and mutual inspiration within the broader artistic community in Calgary. The School will play host and facilitator; the expertise and experience will come from our city’s artists, arts administrators, producer/presenters, and audiences.

The general plan within the series is to invite representatives from across all three artistic disciplines represented in the School—dance, drama and music— to offer brief presentations on a chosen topic; these offerings will be followed by open conversation among the members of Calgary’s cultural communities. The topic for this first gathering is “Audiences in 2017: Challenges and Opportunities.”

We hope the forum will offer up informed impressions of the nature of contemporary audiences—behaviours, trends, patterns, predictions, and proposals—and create space, both physical and conceptual, for collaborative initiatives. We’ve invited representatives from across disciplines, demographics, organization sizes, budgets, and mandates to weigh in for approx. 3 - 5 minutes on this topic, to be followed by a moderated open conversation.

Our goal is for the SCPA to become a space for sharing and collaborating across disciplinary and institutional divides towards a collective imaging of the future of performance in Calgary.

The SCPA Cultural Community Forum series is an initiative of the School’s Community Engagement and Recruitment Committee
