Programs

The School of Creative and Performing Arts comprises three academic disciplines – Dance, Drama and Music – which collectively provide support for five undergraduate and four graduate degree programs. These include:

  • Bachelor of Arts (Dance), with an optional concentration in Choreography and Performance
  • Combined degree Bachelor of Arts (Dance) / Bachelor of Kinesiology
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drama)
  • Bachelor of Arts (Music), with an optional concentration in Sonic Arts
  • Bachelor of Arts – Honours (Music)
  • Bachelor of Music, with Composition, Integrated Studies, and Performance routes and an optional concentration in Sonic Arts
  • Master of Arts (Musicology)
  • Master of Fine Arts (Directing, Design and Technical Theatre, Playwriting, Theatre Studies)
  • Master of Music (Composition, Conducting, Instrumental or Vocal Performance, Sonic Arts)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Composition, Musicology, Sonic Arts)

The School also provides support for three concurrent degree programs – BA (Dance)/B. Kinesiology, BFA (Drama)/BEd, BMus/BEd – and minors in each of Dance, Drama, Music and Sonic Arts. Within the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Music works with the Department of Computer Science, the Faculty of Environmental Design and the Department of Art to jointly offer two degrees (MSc and PhD) in Computational Media Design.

In addition to the courses that are available to its majors and others with consent, the School of Creative and Performing Arts provides numerous courses open to every student in every program at the University of Calgary. Upon successful completion of an audition, students from across the campus may also participate in music ensembles (Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, New Music, Collegium Musicum, Jazz, World Music, Chamber Choir), the University of Calgary Operetta, and dance performances (Dance Montage). For those who like to sing, the University Chorus is open to the entire University community.
